Department of Botony

INTRODUCTION : - The Department offers UG and PG courses. Which emphasis on emerging area of modern Botany including various advance courses like plant pathology, plant physiology, plant Biotechnology, Genetics, Applied Botany and Fundamental Botany. Department has always placed emphasis on teaching and co-curricular activities. Class test, Assignment, hands on activities are given to the students to enhance their curricular performance. The Department also regularly organizes field trips, study tours, botanical excursions, guest lectures, project exhibition and seminar are few of the co-curricular activities organized by the department which certainly prepare the students to face the future challenges. The department has well-experienced and highly qualified faculty members and well equipped laboratories, which have made consistent efforts to improve the students learning, research and development processes. The students of this department are highly benefitted by the knowledge of the teachers of the department.

VISION:- The Department wishes to provide more national level exposure to its students through collaborative work with various Universities and Institutes in India. The Department always strives for improvement in qualitative output by teaching methods, research programmes, regular organization of seminars, visits to other institutions, helping the students publish their research works etc. The Department also proposes to create job-oriented course modules for its students and provide consultancy services for competitive examinations.

MISION :- As part of a reputed government college it draws the best and the brightest along with a good number of students from different backgrounds especially from Minority Families, our mission is to inculcate ethical values and promote social responsibility through an innovative learning process in basic sciences and humanities.

OBJECTIVES :-
• To comprehend functional categories in plant sciences.
• To develop a strong foundation in fundamental science for scientific understanding.
• To develop and promote scientific literacy among students.
• To update course contents by introducing recent developments in plant sciences.
• To prepare the curriculum as such that it can attract, enthuse, sustain and promote the interest of learners for selecting Botany and allied disciplines as their career and make them realize that their choice is intellectually rewarding.
• To ensure that the curricula are not overloaded .Minimizing the descriptive aspects and eliminating repetition of contents between under graduate and post graduate syllabi is the major objective.
• To provide the students of Bachelor’s programmed in Botany, an opportunity to opt one or more courses in allied disciplines to help them pursue specialization / research in interdisciplinary areas.
• To make provision for improvement in the quality of laboratory and field work in the lack of which the students are not able to appreciate the beauty and variety of form, structure, function and ecological significance of plants and their biological services.
• To increase the awareness of young learners about the abuse to which plants have been subjected by human greed.
• To provide for the mobility of students among institutions and different disciplines so as to acquaint with the latest trends and techniques adopted in the field of applied botany.

GOALS :

holistic development and academic excellence to contribute effectively to the understanding of the subject.
To develop an aptitude towards science and nature.
To equip the students with the basic skills in identifying and labeling different plants.
To impart quality education in the field of Botany enabling our students to confidently face the job market.

SCOPE AND IMPORTANCE :- The study of plants is vital because they underpin almost all animal life on Earth by generating a large proportion of the oxygen and food that provide humans and other organisms with aerobic respiration with the chemical energy they need to exist. Plants, algae and Cyanobacteria are the major groups of organisms that carry out photosynthesis, a process that uses the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars that can be used both as a source of chemical energy and of organic molecules that are used in the structural components of cells. As a by-product of photosynthesis, plants release oxygen into the atmosphere, a gas that is required by nearly all living things to carry out cellular respiration. In addition, they are influential in the global carbon and water cycles and plant roots bind and stabilize soils, preventing soil erosion. Plants are crucial to the future of human society as they provide food, oxygen, medicine, and products for people, as well as creating and preserving soil. Historically, all living things were classified as either animals or plants. and botany covered the study of all organisms not considered animals. Botanists examine both the internal functions and processes within plant organelles, cells, tissues, whole plants, plant populations and plant communities. At each of these levels, a botanist may be concerned with the classification of plant life.
